The name of Stukwerkers goes back to the year 1338, when permission was granted to the labourers, associated under that name, to load and unload boats on the rivers Lieve, Lys, Escaut and the Sas and Bruges canals.
As such, Stukwerkers can be considered as the oldest stevedoring company in the Port of Ghent, and is certainly amongst the oldest in Europe. Throughout the centuries, the Stukwerkers continued as a guild of dock-labourers in the Port of Ghent.
In 1860 it became an independent trade body. In 1869 the Société Coopérative 'De Stukwerkers' were organised and in 1948 the Stukwerkers Havenbedrijf nv were established as an independent limited liability company, remaining so up to this day.
At present, Stukwerkers Havenbedrijf nv can be ranked among the leading stevedoring companies in the country, and is one of the most important and most diversified in the Port of Ghent, both in respect of the goods handled and in the location of our waterbound terminals and warehouses. Stukwerkers Havenbedrijf nv handles a total of about 2.5 million tons per year of general cargo, bulk and breakbulk cargo in a variety of commodities.
